Counters (수량사)

What Are Counters?

In Korean, you cannot simply say "three apples" by putting a number before a noun. You need a counter word (수량사) that classifies what you are counting -- similar to "cups of" in "three cups of coffee."

Counters Use Native Korean Numbers

Counters always pair with Native Korean numbers (하나, 둘, 셋...), and numbers 1-4 use their shortened forms:

Word Order Patterns

There are two common word orders for counters:

Pattern 1: Noun + Number + Counter (most common)

Pattern 2: Number + Counter + 의 + Noun (less common, written)

Pattern 1 is far more natural in spoken Korean.
