Overview
The 르 irregular (르 불규칙) affects verbs and adjectives whose stems end in 르. When followed by the ~아/어 ending, a special change occurs: the ㅡ drops, and an extra ㄹ is added to the preceding syllable.

The Rule
Step by step (using 모르다 as example)
- Take the stem: 모르
- Remove ㅡ from 르: 모ㄹ
- Add ㄹ to the previous syllable: 몰
- Add the ending ~라 (because 오 in 모 is a bright vowel): 몰라
- Add 요: 몰라요
How to determine ~라 vs ~러

When the Change Does NOT Apply
The 르 irregular only happens before ~아/어 endings. Before other endings, 르 stays as is:

Key point: The doubling of ㄹ only happens with the ~아/어 conjugation family (including past tense ~았/었). All other endings treat the stem normally.

Notice that 모르다 also follows ㄹ-drop rules (since the stem ends in ㄹ): ㄹ drops before ㄴ, ㅂ, ㅅ.

르 Irregular vs 으 Irregular
Do not confuse the 르 irregular with the 으 irregular (쓰다 → 써요). They are different patterns:
